Questions and commissions. |
Harvest 53 inches x 45 inches "What Makes Life Good" 2009 Quilters Treasure quilting contest. The required fabric is a Grape Marble. I was inspired by the Art Nouveau artist Alphons Mucha's "Fruits" for this quilt I painted the figure directly onto the gold silk and then proceeded to lay fabrics around to create the figures hair, dress and most of the fruit she is holding. | |
Detail of Face Painting and Grapes |
After I painted the face, using crayons and oil pastels, I started arranging flowers around to create hair.
I also started arranging fruit into her hands. I made grapes out of the required fabric and hand sewed them down in grape bunch forms. |
Detail of Dress and Fruit |
The dress was created from 3 pieces of fabric. I chose a bright tropical blue with a fern-like leaf batik pattern. I quilted around the existing pattern in the fabric. |
Detail of Trellis Border Embroidery Stitchout |
I digitized several borders for this quilt. These borders are available for sale in my Embroidery section. You will find the 2 borders on the Flourish Flower Border page I stitched all borders out onto silk fabric. After I had the length I need for each side, I sewed them down to the edges of the center panel. |
Detail of the stitchout of the bottom border |
I digitized this border using a part of a letter of a decorative font. It added just the visual weight I need to finish the bottom edge of this quilt. The Border Designs I digitized for this quilt can be found on Flourish Flower Border page in my Embroidery section. |
Detail of the Grapes and Pears Embroidery Stitchouts |
I digitized the grapes, leaves and pears that drape along the top of this quilt. I needed the grapes to be in scale with the figure. I wanted to create the effect of her standing beneath an arbor. The grapes, leaves and pears I digitized fot this quilt can be found on Fruit Embroidery page in my Embroidery section. |
Detail of the Grapes Stitched on Tulle |
I stitched the fruit on a large piece of tulle flipping the file and changing colors as I went. Once I had enough to go across the top to create the effect of an arbor, I cut the grapes out and sewed the fruit down to the main panel. The grapes, leaves and pears I digitized fot this quilt can be found on Fruit Embroidery page in my Embroidery section. I free-style-quilted additional grapes and lattice to finish the background of the quilt. |
